CONISTON AVENUE GARDENS
UPMINSTER, ESSEX
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We were approached by a local landscape contractor to assist with the repurposing of the family garden. The rear of the site, in particular, was underutilised, featuring a poorly-maintained lawn due to low light levels caused by neighbouring trees that couldn't be altered.
Additionally, there were overgrown planting beds and an old, structurally unsound tool shed rendering it unusable. The client's objective was to install a garden office in this area, necessitating a reimagining of the surrounding garden to complement the new building.
At the front of the garden, the existing patio was to be retained, while the thin, slightly raised beds that ran alongside a lawn needed enlarging.
To address these requirements, we designed a space that formalises the rear portion of the garden. A corten steel moongate frames not only the new garden building but also a large stone sphere, which anchors the space and serves as a focal point. We tackled the challenge of limited light by incorporating foliage planting, with occasional bursts of colour from flowering shrubs and spring bulbs. A circular lawn has been retained, but we have used a shade-tolerant grass mix to combat the difficult conditions. Gravel paths traverse the space, connecting the two sections of the garden.
The front portion of the garden has been brought up to date, complimenting the newly designed rear. We have slightly widened the raised beds to accommodate a broader range of plants, providing year-round interest. The lawn has been preserved, ensuring ample space for the client's children to play.
